3S Recommends....

Each week we'll be showcasing one of our students recommending one of their favorite books for others to read.  This week we are showcasing....Sydney!  Here's what Sydney has to say...

"You just HAVE to read "Junie B. Jones Smells Something Fishy" by Barbara Park.  I loved this book because I like pets and in this book it has pet day, when you can bring your pet to school.  You can talk about your pet and show tricks that your pet can do.  Also how to care for your pet."

Searching for "Evidence"

One of the goals of the Common Core standards is to get students to think more deeply and look for evidence to support answers to questions in their reading. In these photos, students are looking for evidence in the story "Kumak's Fish"  to compare and contrast how a spring day in the Arctic is different from a spring day at River Ridge.

Do you remember where you were on Sept. 11, 2001?

Today we took some time in class to discuss the events of Sept. 11, 2001.  It's hard to believe that our third graders weren't even born yet....but some of them were very knowledgeable, and some were hearing about that day for the very first time.  It's a tough subject, but such an important one.  We are focusing on the heroes of that day, and we started brainstorming about the heroes in our own lives.  Throughout this week, we'll be writing about our heroes in a multi-paragraph expository essay.

Take some time at home to talk about the events of Sept 11th with your child, and how it affected your life.  Below is a great video to get that discussion started...

Off and running with Accelerated Reader!

The third graders are already busy reading towards their Accelerated Reader goals!  Last week we took the STAR reading tests, which calculated our first quarter goals, as well as our reading levels.  Our third graders are expected to read chapter books at their individual level, working to increase their stamina in reading longer books. Students are also encouraged to read nonfiction books.  You can access your child's progress in AR from home; if you have lost your log-in information, please let me know. Watch your weekly newsletter for an update on your child's progress toward their quarterly goal.

Keep up the great reading, third graders!!!!
